How to prepare your grass for winter


It is getting cold outside, and you want to do everything you can to help your winter grass to thrive and be successful during these cold winter months. There are some steps you can take to help, and here are some things you want to consider.

Remove weeds

The first thing you want to do is remove weeds. All these are doing is taking away from the nutrients and water that your grass needs, so getting rid of them is a great start to your success.

Fertilize for the winter

You also want to fertilize your grass for the winter. Fertilizer is already an important part of helping your grass to grow, but it is even more essential leading into the winter months. You should do this about a week or two after your last mowing.

Make sure that any fertilizer you use contains high amounts of nitrogen. Apply nitrogen to your lawn in the fall will help it to look much greener in the spring as soil temperatures begin to rise. You are definitely going to have the lawn you desire.

As an important note, some fertilizers contain seed in them as well. Do not use these. This is not the time to risk overseeding, so focus on just fertilizing to help the current grass you have.

Aerate your lawn

It is also good for you to aerate your lawn. If you want grass that grows thick and strong, especially as you enter into the spring, aerating is the perfect solution. This will help to ensure that nutrients and water reach the roots of your plans, helping to make them look much better come springtime.

Use a fungicide

One thing you want to be concerned about is fungus growing in your lawn during the winter. Fungus thrives in wet areas, and there is snow mold that can do a lot of damage to your lawn. As the weather warms up and the snow begins to melt, that mold will thaw and can do a lot of damage to your grass. Using a fungicide will help to protect that from occurring.

Trim your trees

Tree trimming is important at this time as well. With cold temperatures coming, it is important to get your grass is much sunlight as possible. Trimming your trees will help with this. It is also beneficial for the trees to do this, as you ensure the health of the tree will increase as it is getting more sunlight.

As you can see, a few simple things will help your grasp or prosper. Take these steps leading into the winter and you are sure to have a great looking lawn come springtime.
